Deja Vu: 500+ Tombstones Vandalized in Jewish Philadelphia Cemetery, 2nd US Case in Under A Week

Another Jewish cemetery has been vandalized in the United States in what appears to be a case of growing Antisemitism.   The Mt. Carmel Cemetery on the corner of Frankford and Cheltenham avenues in Philadelphia was vandalized Sunday morning.   500 or more headstones were knocked over in the Jewish Cemetery.   Aaron Mallin  made the disturbing discovery Sunday when he came to visit his father’s grave:

“It’s just very disheartening that such a thing would take place, I’m hoping it was maybe just some drunk kids. But the fact that there’s so many, it leads one to think it could have been targeted.” Aaron Mallin

Mallin hopes it was an act of some random drunk people, but is very doubtful of this due to the number of headstones that have been vandalized. A similar incident just occurred in Missouri where hundreds of headstones were kicked over in another Jewish Cemetery.

Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf Tweeted out saying those responsible must be caught, others offered a $10,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of those responsible:

Reporter Bob Brooks of ABC News spoke with a local rabbi, who came out with a group of people of all faiths to look over the damage and restore the headstones.

“This is people from Quaker, Muslim, Jewish communities. Some Rabbis, my colleagues, we just heard about this thanks to your reporting, and came out here out of the desire to be in solidarity to show that we’re not interested in any narrative about victimization and as heartbreaking as this is, we are strong together.

I just met two congregants of mine who were here, one whom has relatives. His way of responding was to go row by row and count, and he’s counted over 500 tombstones.” Rabbi

If you have any information that would lead to the arrest of those responsible you are urged to contact that Philadelphia Police.
