GOP Immigration Reform is Here!

The Security, Enforcement, and Compassion United in Reform Efforts, or SECURE Act, has been put forward by the GOP and DNC Jointly and looks set to get enough support to pass. It focuses primarily on DACA recipients and offers them three-year work permits in exchange for an end to chain migration.

It was revealed last week that chain migration accounts for 70% of the legal migration into the US, almost 110 million people over the last decade. With chain migration, there are no skills required nor qualifications other than being a family member. This has led to a surge in unskilled labor that compresses the wages of the poorest in communities.

The bill also covers other areas such as:

  • Mandatory screening to for illegals to prevent them being hired for jobs.
  • Closing asylum loopholes used by migrants to get into the United States.
  • Penalizing  “sanctuary cities” that refuse to cooperate with federal immigration-enforcement agencies.

Senate Judiciary Chairman Chuck Grassley said of the bill:

“This bi-partisan pro-American worker reform, which the President strongly supports, is an important first step towards creating the merit-based, economically productive immigration system that both Democrats and Republicans want to see.”

The bill would also enact “Kate’s Law” to deal with illegal migrants who have already been deported by introducing far sterner penalties for repeat offenders. But one of the more popular measures is to introduce the mandatory usage of “e-verify” which allows all companies (large and small) to check that job applicants are legally allowed to work in the US.
