Oregon Bakery MUST Pay Lesbian Couple

Two Christian bakers in Oregon who refused to bake a wedding cake for a Lesbian couple have been told by the Court of Appeals that they must pay a staggering $135,000 in damages for the ladies who said they felt “mentally raped” by the ordeal.

The fact that what amounts to an artistic expression is (according to this court) now subject to the will of strangers is surely a blow to freedom and liberty.

The couple were not denied service, they were free to buy a regular cake or have a cake with a different message. But it appears that the judges in the Appeals Court think that the bakers choice of religion now comes secondary to a “protected classes” choice of cake.

Lawyer for the bakery, First Liberty Institute president Kelly Shackelford, said:

“Freedom of expression for ourselves should require freedom of expression for others.”
“The Oregon Court of Appeals decided that Aaron and Melissa Klein are not entitled to the Constitution’s promise of religious liberty and free speech.”

The lesbian couple were wrong to pursue this. And they were wrong to whip up a vicious hate mob who planted themselves outside the bakery.

It’s arguable that the bakers (running a business) should have taken the order…But to be forced to either go against your religious principles or face bankruptcy is just plain wrong.
