Merkel also lost the support of a key political figure. Horst Seehofer, the conservative premier of Bavaria, said he did not support Merkel’s open-door policies any longer. In response to Merkel’s earlier statement, Seehofer expressed his doubt that Germany could still “do it:”
‘”We can do this” – I cannot, with the best will, adopt this phrase as my own.’ – Seehofer
Seehofer is only echoing the will of the German people. His response came after Merkel continued to try to defend her open-door immigration policies which the German people obviously disagree with. In a recent survey, over 83% of Germans believe that Immigration is Germany’s bigger problem. This number has doubled since the same survey was taken last year. The German people are getting tired of reading about the mass rape, murder, and assaults occurring at the hands of Syrian Refugees.
