President Trump used his first Tweet of the New Year to tackle an issue that has been largely ignored (in terms of actually doing something about it) by previous administrations. He called out Pakistan for their lack of cooperation, lies, and deceit in dealing with terrorism, But Trump being Trump did not just use grand rhetoric…He backed up his words by letting them know that they will no longer receive the over $200 million military aid they have been getting.
“The United States has foolishly given Pakistan more than 33 billion dollars in aid over the last 15 years, and they have given us nothing but lies & deceit, thinking of our leaders as fools. They give safe haven to the terrorists we hunt in Afghanistan, with little help. No more!”
$33 Billion over 15 years!! This is insane.
We all understand the purpose of “soft-power” diplomacy and how aid payments are made to ensure allies and assistance worldwide, but this figure is staggering. And what did we get for it? I think Donald Trump summed this up well with “Lies and Deceit.”
Pakistan is a nation with good people and bad (the same as every other), but the fact that its government have been extremely unhelpful in fighting terrorism (that indeed kills its own people, too) shows a real moral deficit.
